dc.description This paper is one of the earlier papers reviewing the application of time-frequency techniques to speech recognition. (The most recent upgrade of the original software package that calculates Time-Frequency Distributions and Instantaneous Frequency estimators can be downloaded from the web site: www.time-frequency.net. This was the first software developed in the field, and it was first released publicly in 1987 at the 1st ISSPA conference held in Brisbane, Australia., and then continuously updated). en_US
dc.description.abstract Techniques for machine recognition of speech exist, but use representations of the speech signal which cannot convey some of the speech information. Alternatives from time-frequency and time-scale analysis are compared with the traditional methods with a view to improving the word recognition rate. Experiments have shown the speech recognition rate improves in some cases. en_US
