Title: Mobile unit velocity estimation in microcellular systems using the ZCR of the instantaneous frequency of the received signal

Abstract: This paper presents a new estimator for the velocity of a mobile station in microcellular systems. The proposed estimator is based on the zero-crossing rate of the instantaneous frequency of the received signal. The effects of additive noise, scattering distribution, and shadowing on the proposed velocity estimator are analyzed. The IF-based velocity estimator outperforms the conventional estimators in the presence of shadowing.
Description: This paper showed that unlike velocity estimators based on the statistics of the envelope or quadrature components of the received signal, the IF-based one is robust to shadowing. (The most recent upgrade of the original software package that calculates Time-Frequency Distributions and Instantaneous Frequency estimators can be downloaded from the web site: www.time-frequency.net. This was the first software developed in the field, and it was first released publicly in 1987 at the 1st ISSPA conference held in Brisbane, Australia, and then continuously updated).
