dc.description This paper showed that unlike velocity estimators based on the statistics of the envelope or quadrature components of the received signal, the IF-based one is robust to shadowing. (The most recent upgrade of the original software package that calculates Time-Frequency Distributions and Instantaneous Frequency estimators can be downloaded from the web site: www.time-frequency.net. This was the first software developed in the field, and it was first released publicly in 1987 at the 1st ISSPA conference held in Brisbane, Australia, and then continuously updated). en_US
dc.description.abstract This paper presents a new estimator for the velocity of a mobile station in microcellular systems. The proposed estimator is based on the zero-crossing rate of the instantaneous frequency of the received signal. The effects of additive noise, scattering distribution, and shadowing on the proposed velocity estimator are analyzed. The IF-based velocity estimator outperforms the conventional estimators in the presence of shadowing. en_US
