This paper presents 2 methods for estimating the K-factor using the statistics of the envelope of the received
signal at the MS; the proposed estimators are robust to scattering distribution and can be used in conjunction with velocity estimators.
(To deal with non-stationarities, additional details can be found in the comprehensive book on Time-Frequency Signal Analysis and Processing (see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/isbn/0080443354).
In addition, the most recent upgrade of the original software package that calculates Time-Frequency Distributions and Instantaneous Frequency estimators can be downloaded from the web site: www.time-frequency.net. This was the first software developed in the field, and it was first released publicly in 1987 at the 1st ISSPA conference held in Brisbane, Australia, and then continuously updated). |

In this paper, we propose two estimators for the Ricean K-factor, which has applications in mobile communication systems. The estimators are based on the first two moments of the envelope of the received signal. The effects of scattering distribution, additive noise and shadowing on the proposed estimators are analyzed. We show that the proposed estimators are robust to non-isotropic scattering and their performance is only mildly affected by shadowing. |
