Abstract: An adaptive approach to the estimation of the instantaneous frequency (IF) of multicomponent FM signals in additive Gaussian noise has been recently analyzed using a time-only kernel. In this paper we justify applying this approach to other two members of the quadratic class of time-frequency distributions: the spectrogram and Choi-Williams distribution. We also compare the statistical performance of these distributions using the bias, the variance, and the optimum lag window lengths of their IF estimators.
Description: This paper presents an adaptive algorithm for IF estimation in additive Gaussian noise for multicomponent FM signals and compares it with other QTFD based methods using the optimum lag window length, bias and variance as criteria. In addition, the most recent upgrade of the original software package that calculates Time-Frequency Distributions and Instantaneous Frequency estimators can be downloaded from the web site: www.time-frequency.net. This was the first software developed in the field, and it was first released publicly in 1987 at the 1st ISSPA conference held in Brisbane, Australia, and then continuously updated).
