Title: An Optical Signal Processor for Time Frequency Signal Analysis Using the Wigner-Ville Distribution

Abstract: The real-time implementation of the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD), a tool for time-frequency analysis, is investigated in this paper. Because of the high number of numerical operations required to calculate this distribution, fast architectures are needed. The architecture described in this paper is a digital/optical hybrid system, which haa the advantage of a high optic throughput and the flexibility of a digital computer. A simulation of the WVD optical processor is also presented in this paper.
Description: This paper discusses an optical signal processing scheme to form a Wigner-ville interferometer for the analysis of non-stationary signals. Applications for this architecture include radar imaging identification of aircraft, ECG analysis for the detection of heart disease, speech, utterance recognition and many other applications where real-time processing is needed. In addition, the most recent upgrade of the original software package that calculates Time-Frequency Distributions and Instantaneous Frequency estimators can be downloaded from the web site: www.time-frequency.net. This was the first software developed in the field, and it was first released publicly in 1987 at the 1st ISSPA conference held in Brisbane, Australia, and then continuously updated).
