dc.description This paper presents a number of schemes for transient detection based on the WVD and XWVD, for which the presence of a signal is indicated by a concentration of energy in the time-frequency plane and possible including [ a time-varying filtering operation. dc.description.abstract Transient. detection techniques are reviewed and methods based on time-frequency signal analysis with the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD). and the cross Wigner-Ville distribution (XiVD) introduced. The WVD and XWVD are shown to provide high resolution signal characterisation in a time-frequency domain and good noise performance. Simulations of detection of a transient with unknown wave shape using these techniques is seen to perform better than classical energy detection. en_US
