Abstract
This study aims to conduct a narrative review of the literature on the prices of antiretroviral (ARV) medicines. A literature search was performed across various scientific databases to identify original research articles on ARV medicine pricing. Fourteen original research articles published since 2010 were discovered and utilized in this study. The findings indicate that over time, reductions in the prices of both branded and generic ARV medicines have been observed. The introduction of generics likely influenced the pricing of branded medicines, while generic competition appears to have had a more significant impact on the prices of generics themselves. Interestingly, this study revealed a correlation between a country's income level and ARV medicine pricing: higher-income countries tend to experience higher ARV prices. Indian generic manufacturers offer their ARV medicines at significantly lower prices compared to branded options and non-Indian generic manufacturers. The price advantage of generic medicines, primarily due to the introduction of generics and increased competition, highlights the importance of promoting their use. Additionally, procurement strategies, such as the voluntary price reduction (VPP), have shown effective evidence in lowering prices. Over the years, a gradual decrease in prices has been noted, particularly following the introduction of generics. Overall, these insights can guide policymakers in developing strategies to make medicines more affordable and accessible to those in need.
