Coccoliths From Some Paleogene Rocks In The Gulf Of Suez Area, Egypt
Abstract
This paper describes and illustrates the calcareous nannoplankton (coccoliths) recorded in 240 samples collected from the Paleogene rocks in Wadi Belayim/Wadi Nukhul surface sections. Gulf of Suez area. Egypt. Thirty species of cocoliths belonging to 14 genera and 4 families of the Suborder Coccolithineae Order Coccolithophorales are defined. A shortened discussion on their stratigraphic occurrences is presented.
Analysis of the nannoflora has led to the definition of two proposed nannoplankton zones. These are the Nannotetrina flugens and the Reticulofenestra umbilica zones both of which are of Middle Eocene age. Such nannobiozones are equated with the planktonic foraminiferal zones of the same age. Both microbiostratigraphic zones were found to be correlatable with those in other parts of the world.
