TypeMaster Thesis
Alternative AbstractTravel helps bring peoples closer together, activates dialogue among civilizations, and Islamic records are full of travelers whose names have been immortalized in the field of communication among different civilizations. One of them is Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, who left in 309 AH/AD 921 in an official embassy from Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid caliphate, to the land of the Saqaliba [i.e. Slavs], and gave amazing views of the peoples he went through. For this research problem revolved around the impact of the traveler Ibn Fadlan in the dialogue of civilizations, and the study aimed to get to know Ibn Fadlan, introduce his journey, explore his approach to dialogue among civilizations, identify the types of dialogue embodied in the journey, and compare civilization interaction with the journey between Muslims and others. That is in a preface, and three chapters. The study reached a number of conclusions, the most important of which: Ibn Fadlan has influenced the dialogue among civilizations on three levels: Methodological level, he took an integrated approach to study others based on observation, coexistence, description, criticism, and second: The level of practical dialog characterized by diversity in religion, politics, culture, and the third: The level of civilizational interaction; his journey has enjoyed wide interaction among Muslims and others in many areas. The study recommended that Ibn Fadlan be featured in educational curricula, that Muslim travellers benefit from his experience, and that Islamic journeys of a missionary nature be resumed, in addition to that included a number of proposals, including: translating foreign studies about Ibn Fadlan, criticizing it, comparing his journey with other journeys, and studying aspects that were not studied before.
