AbstractThis study investigates the Arabic language proficiency levels and rates among a group of non-Arab expatriates in Qatar, as well as their attitudes toward Arabic and experiences of learning and using it in their daily lives in Qatar. By using quantitative and qualitative methods, the study found a relatively low Arabic acquisition rates despite positive attitudes toward the language among the participants. Since Arabic language is a key element of the Arab identity, enhancing its status and usage in Qatar, in a context where non-Arab population outnumbers Arabs, is of paramount importance. The study concludes with a suggestion that the decision-makers should consider introducing policies that would encourage and enable non-Arab residents to learn the Arabic language. In such manner, the study argues, increased use of Arabic by non-Arab residents would positively contribute to the preservation of Qatar's Arab and Islamic values and identity
