الملخصBreaking bad news is challenging, requiring effective communication skills, empathy, and cultural sensitivity. The research was conducted in two phases, the first a scoping review of health professionals' views and experiences of breaking bad news in the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean region. Of the 24 studies, key themes were: positive views and experiences (e.g., perceived adequate knowledge/skills); negative views and experiences (e.g., reported lack of training); practice varies with experience; and need for education/training. The second study was qualitative, exploring experiences of resident doctors at Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar 3-months post-participation in breaking bad news workshop. In addition to themes similar to those of the scoping review, three were mapped to the Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) model: training needs assessment; positive workshop experiences; and lasting impact. In conclusion, the research has highlighted that challenges persist regarding breaking bad news and that further training is required and likely beneficial.
