MEGA SPORTS EVENTS AND NATIONAL IDENTITY: THE CASE OF QATAR WORLD CUP 2022
Abstract
This study investigates how hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup contributed to the development of national identity in Qatar. Despite being the first Middle Eastern country to host this mega-sporting event, the impact of this event on Qatari national identity remains underexplored, particularly from the citizens' perspectives. Addressing this gap, the research examines the core elements shaping Qatari identity, influence of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar on this identity, and the alignment between governmental portrayals and citizens' self-perceptions. Utilizing qualitative methods including focus groups and semi-structured interviews with Qatari citizens, the study sheds light on the personal and collective experiences of Qatari citizens related to the World Cup. The findings suggest that the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar reinforced a sense of national pride, strengthened social solidarity among the participants, while also highlighted Qatar's distinctiveness on the global stage in the perceptions of the participants. The findings also provide insights into the national identity development of Qatari citizens amidst challenges like globalization, demographic shifts, and regional tensions. This research contributes to the literature on national identity and the role of mega-sporting events in small, rapidly developing nations.
