AbstractCybersecurity in smart grids is of critical importance given the heavy reliance of modern societies on electricity and the recent cyberattacks that resulted in blackouts. The evolution of the legacy electric grid to a smarter grid holds great promises but also comes up with an increasesd attack surface. In this article, we review state of the art developments in cybersecurity for smart grids, both from a standardization as well technical perspective. This work shows the important areas of future research for academia, and collaboration with government and industry stakeholders to enhance smart grid cybersecurity and make this new paradigm not only beneficial and valuable but also safe and secure.
