Creating value from business intelligence systems investments
Abstract
Both academics and practitioners have recognized the value of business intelligence systems (BI systems, hereafter) to enhance planning, control, decision-making, and organizational performance. This value stems from the ability of the several applications and technologies that BI systems comprise to interpret the big business event data saved in the data warehouse of the organization. Such capabilities enable BI systems to generate reports that support the organizations' operational and competitive activities, including production, customer service, competitors' moves, new technology, public policy, and market forces (Elbashir, Collier, Sutton, Davern, and Leech, 2013). Such capabilities have made BI systems one of the most critical strategic technologies for an organization's survival and success (Cottrill, 1998; Thomas, 2001).
