Distance power system protection in presence of renewable energies (solar and wind)
Abstract
Renewable energy become widely used in recent years in order to reduce CO2 emission, which produce from burning oil and gas to generate electrical energy. Solar and wind energies are the main types of renewable energies, as it can be installed near the load, so that it improves power quality that transmitted to load. However, renewable energies can cause mal-operation of distance relay as they can affect the impedance measured by the relay. This Thesis will concern on study of the impact of solar and wind energies on the protection of transmission lines and distance relay. The model of system is simulated by using Matlab/Simulink, while power world simulator is used to perform fault analysis, and detecting fault currents. Single line-to-ground,
line-to-line, and double line-to-ground faults will be applied in the transmission lines to verify relay performance in presence of renewable energies. Zones of protection by distance relays is studied in order to detect the impact of renewable energy on fault location seen by the relay
