THE EFFECT OF GENERATIVE AI ON STUDENTS' CREATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
Abstract
Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are assigned the responsibility of cultivating skillsets in students that improve their employability and maximize their value to industry. Creativity and problem-solving are important skills to which the job market attaches significant importance. However, HEI is heavily criticized for its incompetence in developing creative problem-solving skills that meet the market demands. Artificial intelligence and the recent advancement in generative AI promise to bridge the gap between academia and industry. In this research, we examine the effect of student use of generative AI on creative problem-solving skills considering their self-efficacy and perception of the technology. We adopted a mixed-method design experiment to identify factors contributing to generative AI's success in cultivating creative problem-solving skills. Our findings highlight the integration of generative AI in higher education may not automatically enhance students' creative problem-solving abilities, and that other factor, such as student engagement and competency, play a crucial role in determining the effectiveness of this technology
