This chapter discusses the common types of mouthwashes used in the maintenance of oral hygiene and prevention of dental diseases. The principles underlying the use of mouthwashes are summarised followed by the composition of over-the-counter and prescription mouthwashes. The indications, concentration and commercial preparations of fluoridated, antimicrobial and desensitising mouthwashes are discussed. Tooth whitening and herbal mouthwashes are also discussed briefly. The readers are signposted to useful online resources on oral hygiene and mouthwashes along with resources which may be used for patient education.
