This chapter discusses the common types of toothpastes used in the maintenance of oral hygiene and prevention of dental diseases. The composition of over-the-counter and prescription toothpastes are outlined. Fluoride concentration and commercial preparations of fluoridated toothpastes recommended for different age groups are described in the light of contemporary guidelines by recognised professional organisations. Special formulation toothpastes are also discussed. The readers are signposted to useful online resources on toothpastes and fluorides along with resources which may be used for patient education.
