AbstractThe year 1974 marked the dawn of a significant global movement-World Environment Day. Since its inception, this day, observed annually on June 5th, has served as a vital platform for the world to unite in addressing pressing environmental challenges. It brings together individuals, governments, and industries, calling for collective action to nurture a sustainable future. In honor of World Environment Day 2023, we are delighted to present a special issue of the Emergent Materials Journal titled "Material Science for an Environmentally Sustainable World." The urgency of our environmental predicament cannot be overstated. Humanity faces a convergence of complex environmental crises, from climate change and habitat destruction to pollution and resource depletion. These challenges demand innovative solutions and a concerted global effort. It is within this context that material science and engineering emerge as pivotal forces for positive change. Most importantly, material science holds the potential to transform the way we interact with the environment. By harnessing the power of advanced materials and technology, we can develop sustainable solutions that mitigate environmental harm, conserve resources, and drive forward the transition to a greener, more sustainable world. This special issue seeks to highlight the vital role of material science in addressing the environmental imperatives of our time. In this collection of original research articles and reviews, we explore the intersection of material science and environmental sustainability.
