The Audacity to Dream: The Journey of Qatar's Bid to Hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022
Abstract
Qatar has stunned the world with a monthlong tournament. By all accounts, The FIFA Qatar World Cup 2022 was stellar. But before closing the game with arguably the best final ever, Qatar's bid had to survive scrutiny, smear campaigns, and harsh criticism. What started as a bet for a broader economic transformation away from hydrocarbons turned out to be a nation's pledge to stand out on the world map. Qatar went above and beyond for over a decade to assuage the doubts of two dozen FIFA executive committee members who delivered a grim evaluation report upon their 3-day visit to the peninsula. No one believed Qatar was going to win the hosting rights. This teaching case gives the reader a taste of such an uneasy ground. It recounts the journey of fine-tuning the Qatari bid to meet the FIFA require-ments-nothing less than an entirely redrawn country before Sepp Blatter opened the envelope in December 2010 to announce that the tournament was going to new lands.
