Simultaneous treatment of reject brine and capture of carbon dioxide: A comprehensive review
الملخص
The ongoing expansion of industries results in the increased emission of various pollutants into the environment, contributing to the rapid deterioration of air, water, and soil quality. Notable pollutants addressed in this review are carbon dioxide (CO2) and reject brine. Previous work discussed the methods related to individual handling of these two pollutants. However, the most efficient way of managing these wastes is to treat these pollutants in a single reaction. In addition, the proposed approach results in multiple products which can be utilized in many applications. In this study, various options for combined CO2 capture and brine management are reviewed. The effects of various parameters are described. State-of-the-art reactor systems that can achieve high conversion rates are investigated. Furthermore, the utilization of industrial solid wastes and other materials in the combined reaction to achieve high performance and produce different products that have specific potential applications in the industrial sector are explained. Additionally, the effect of the use of electrolysis in the combined process is highlighted. The novel review study contributes to broadening the options for the combined treatment of CO2 and reject brine, which has the potential to mitigate environmental hazards through commercial implementation, and to guide future research.
