Editorial Introduction: Asian Sport History and Culture in the Twenty-first Century

Abstract

When the proposal for a new journal dedicated to the analysis of Asian sport history and culture, (in partnership with its parent journal, the International Journal of the History of Sport) was first mooted, its endorsement by the publisher Taylor and Francis, was in part a recognition of the growing importance of the Asian continent as a focus, in political, economic and in cultural terms. It was also a recognition of the need to challenge the dominance of western-centric analysis in scholarly commentary on cultural developments in Asian contexts, and to manifest some balance between orientalist and occidentalist, and other perspectives
