AbstractThe economy of Qatar is increasing and growing with continuous growth in the population of the citizen and residents; so, the inconsistency between the consumption of water demand and supply is increasing. The treatment of wastewater is a significant way to reuse wastewater and understand the water management system sustainability. Qatar Petroleum has considered reusing and recover most of the wastewater by upgrading the existing wastewater treatment plant within the environmental framework and economically responsible. The existing WWTP was designed for discharging to sea all treated effluent and now Municipality and Environment (MME), requires a minimum of 85% water recovery from Tertiary treatment units. This concept study assesses the development of wastewater treatment upgrades. The outcomes of this study reviews the common wastewater treatment parameters and various possible upgrades technology within Qatar Petroleum Refinery. Two proposed upgrade solution, the first and second proposed scheme was considered feasible. The first scheme is provided with catalytic Oxidation for Sulfide removal- less Oily Sludge production, VOC removal system provided, no secondary clarifier before RO membrane, and approximately 84.5% water recovery. While the second proposed scheme is MBBR technology compact, can handle variations in incoming flow and load, not dependent on good sludge settling characteristics, and simple operation low maintenance and operational control. While it has no VOC treatment facility proposed, carbon particles from Actiflo-Carb may affect UF membrane life, and 82% water recovery. Consequently, the first proposed scheme was considered the most effective and feasible for WWTP and Reverse Osmosis Plant (ROP) as it is cost-effective compared to the 2nd proposed Scheme since there is no second clarifier.
