AbstractThis chapter discusses the common types of oral and topical analgesics used in clinical dentistry, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug s (NSAID s) as well as narcotic analgesics. The principles of prescribing analgesics in dentistry are outlined followed by the mechanism of action indications, contraindications, side effects, dosage, routes of administration, and commercial preparations of the most appropriate NSAIDs and narcotic analgesics which may be used in the management of dental pain. The readers are signposted to useful online resources on analgesics in dentistry along with resources which may be used for patient education.
