Use of Antibiotics in Dentoalveolar Infections
Abstract
This chapter discusses the role of antibiotics in the management of dentoalveolar infections in the light of contemporary professional guidelines. The principles of antibiotic therapy in the management of dentoalveolar infections are outlined. Common types of dentoalveolar infections which warrant the use of antibiotics are identified along with oral conditions which do not require antibiotic prescription. This is followed by an account of the most commonly used antibiotics in general dental practice settings, including their mechanism of action, contraindications, side effects, cautions, dosage and commercial preparations. The readers are signposted to useful online resources on antibiotic use in dentistry along with resources which may be used for patient education.
