Abstract | This chapter discusses the common types of injectable and topical local anaesthetics used for pain control in clinical dentistry. The classification, mechanism of action, constituents, contraindications, side effects, pharmacokinetics and dosage of local anaesthetics are explained. Indications of different local anaesthetics with and without vasoconstrictors are described along with relevant drug interactions, and precautions. Strategies for safe and effective administration of local anaesthetics in dentistry are summarised at the end of the chapter. The readers are signposted to useful online resources on local anaesthetics in dentistry along with resources which may be used for patient education. |
