Management of Medical Emergencies
Abstract
This chapter discusses the recognition and management of common medical emergencies which may be encountered in dental practice. General guidelines on prevention and management of medical emergencies are considered along with essential equipment, and drugs. Assessment of medical emergencies in clinical dental settings is explained. Next, predisposing factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, prevention and treatment of individual medical emergencies are discussed. Topics include vasovagal syncope, acute chest pain, cardiac arrest, respiratory obstruction, acute asthma, anaphylaxis, hypoglycaemia, epileptic seizures, stroke, hyperventilation and adrenal insufficiency. Finally, the readers are signposted to professional guidelines on the management of medical emergencies in dental practice.
