الملخصCorrosion is a very crucial issue compromising the integrity of metallic structures in oil and gas pipelines causing huge economic and environmental risks. Overall, the annual cost of corrosion is 2.5 trillion USD which is 3.4% of global GDP. Thus, it is important to mitigate the corrosion reaction to ensure structural integrity and reliability of metallic structures. So, one of effective approach in corrosion protection strategies is the implementation of self-healing polymeric composite coatings. In more advanced way, polymeric coatings were developed by the reinforcement of polymeric materials through the incorporation of anti-corrosion pigments (nanocarriers loaded with corrosion inhibitors). The developed smart self-healing coatings provide promising solution to quickly repair microcracks, increasing longevity of pipelines and lowering operational costs in plants. Through progressed design and development practices, these smart coatings effectively contribute to lower the maintenance overhards and enhance the materials integrity thus protecting the world from the adverse effects of corrosion.
