AbstractThis paper presents a hutnidification-dehumidification desalination process using waste heat from a gas turbine power plant. In this process, the air is used as the operating fluid instead of water. The process has many advantages over many desalination processes which use waste heat from gas turbines. The amount of fresh water produced and the mass of air-gas mixture leaving the desalination plant were found to decrease with decreasing gas turbine load and with increasing mixing temperature. The air-gas mixture can be safely used in space air conditioning. The specific power consumption of the proposed process was found to be less than that of either single or dual Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) plants. It is greater however, than that of all types of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants. The specific capital investment of the process is found to be less than that for any other desalination process considered. The ratio of water production to power generation in the present process is nevertheless very small.
