    Abstract
Predominantly, there are two wireless technologies for providing vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, i.e., ad hoc IEEE 802.11p and cellular LTE-V2x. This paper provides a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of both technologies. The qualitative evaluation aims to measure how these technologies meet the functional requirements of the V2X applications. To obtain a quantitative analysis, an extensive simulation-based performance evaluation is presented of the most common communication metrics such as latency, packet delivery ratio, and network load. The overall evaluation shows that the IEEE 802.11p provides superior support for safety-critical V2V applications in low-load scenarios. Similarly, LTE-V2x offers extensive support for services requiring infrastructure assistance and network coverage. This paper also provides a better understanding of the apparent need for evolutionary next-generation communication technologies to meet the future V2X application requirements.
