Face is the most noticeable part of our bodies. When we see someone for the first time, or when we are introduced to someone, we look at his/her face. The image of that person is imprinted into our memory basically through the shape of his face.
The shape of the face reflects its beauty and also the effect of aging. As for the expressions which appear on the face, they might express either positive or negative emotions, depending on the context of interaction. We learn during our social upbringing how to read facial gestures and how to show different emotions through facial gestures. The more experience we gain during our life, the more knowledgeable we become with regard to the effect of facial gestures in the act of communication.
This paper is a chapter in nonverbal communication. It talks about the way we utilize facial gestures to express different feelings and attitudes. What is understood here as facial gestures include, in addition to the periphery of the face, the eyes, the eyebrows and the lips.
The author quotes various examples and incidents within the perspective of the Arab culture, which clearly demonstrate that facial gestures constitute an important channel of nonverbal communication |
