Abstract: The diffusion diaphragm cell is considered one of the simplest and most reliable devices for measuring liquid-phase diffusivities. The design of such diaphragm cells has passed through many stages of refinement over the years. This review follows the stages of development of the cells since the first "real" diaphragm cell was introduced by Northrup and Anson in 1929 until the present and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each design. The development of the calibration technique for calibrating the cell and the development of the cell equation are also presented and discussed.
