Abstract

This study aimed to show the relationship between locus of control and mental hygiene for a sample of primary stage U. A. E. children citizens. The sample consisted of 264 children in the 5th and 6th grades. The children locus of control scale was administered to this sample which was later divided into externalists and internalists according to the lower and the upper Quar-tiles. The Warner Personality Rating Qsestionnaire was administered to those two groups. Two-way ANOVA and correlation coefficients results showed significant sex differences in Hostility, dependability, negative self rating; in¬sufficiency feelings; emotional responding and negative outlook to life. There were significant correlations between external locus of control and some negative personality characteristics. Results showed that male externalists were more emotionally responding and having less negative outlook to life, while female externalists were less hostile and less aggressive. These results draw the attention to the importance of carrying out cross-cultural studies in this area of study.
