Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to describe the size of disabilities in Al-Karak, Jordan. This included a description of the disabled demographic factors and the type of disabilities prevailing in Al-Karak. Moreover, it aimed to describe the family conditions of disabled individuals and the services available to them in Al-Karak.
This study used a comprehensive survey technique, in Which people were asked voluntarily to report disabilities in the family. Findings of this study showed that there were 1985 disabled individuals, of whom 1140 males and 845 females, living in 1378 families. Most disabilities (63%) were clustered in two categories of age (11-21 & less than 10 years), Mental Retardation was the highest (39%) one, and 49% of the total disabilities were discovered at birth. Some social and educational applications were discussed and some social policy issues were presented. |
