dc.description.abstract The aim of the research is to identify the nature of the attitudes towards mentally disabled in Oman culture, and the influence of sex, education, and age. A scale consisted of 43 items measuring attitudes towards mentally disabled people was developed. It was applied to 171 men and women, differing in their ages and level of education. In accordance with the results, only 17 items were found to fulfill the emotional intensity criteria and their reliability was 0.79. Factor analysis revealed three factors, namely: integration, employment, and rights of disabled persons. Concerning the nature of the attitudes the results showed that there was a positive attitude in the first factor, a negative in the second factor, and a natural in the third factor. Results of multivariate analysis revealed that sex was significant in the first factor, in favor of females. Furthermore there was an interaction between sex and educational level in the second factor, in favor of males (read and write cell), while there was no effect for the third factor. These results were discussed and evaluated in relation to previous studies. Several recommendations and proposals were forwarded. en_US
