Title: A Bibliometric Study of Literature on Educational Supervision in Selected Arab Refereed Journals and the American "Journal of Curriculum and Supervision"
Author: Atari, Aref Tawflq [عارف توفيق عطاري]
Abstract: This study aims at analyzing the literature on educational supervision in 12 Arab refereed educational journals and the American "Journal of Curriculum and Supervision". The researcher approached the topic from the perspective of the "sociology of science", and employed the bibliometric methodology. The study revealed a humble number of studies (29) scattered in 12 Arabic Journals compared with 49 studies published by the JCS. In both settings the majority of studies were authored by academicians, thus indicating a communication gap between academics and practitioners. Female authors were underrepresented in the Arabic journals while a relatively fair percentage of females contributed to the literature in JCS. In terms of methodology, instruments and analysis Arab authors were more inclined towards, the descriptive, quantitative, questionnaire studies, while there was a diversity of methodologies and instruments employed by the authors of JCS. In terms of topics the majority of Arab studies were limited in scope focusing mainly on investigating the perceptions of teachers and supervisors on or opinions towards roles, tasks of supervisors or their needed competencies and skills, or the problems they face. By contrast, the contributors to JCS were more inclined towards articulating supervisory models, perspectives, alternatives and critiques to supervision. The majority of Arab and JCS articles were single authored. However there was an inter-university cooperation between JCS authors more than between Arab authors. Lastly the geographic affiliation of Arab authors suggests the existence of communication gap between them. The study ended with conclusions and recommendations, inter alia, establishing Arab specialized, professional associations of education; publishing academic journals in different specializations in Arabic language; fostering relationships between Arab researchers of different universities, indexing literature on education in Arabic, bridging the gap between academics and practitioners, applying various methods of research, highlighting the inteF-disciplinarity nature of educational supervision, highlighting the importance of the research paradigm in educational supervision, and lastly conducting further studies in the field of educational supervision.هدفت هذه الدرسة إلى تحليل أدبيات الإشراف التربوي .
