Alternative AbstractThis study attempted to assess the effect of birth-order upon children's preference for praise or encouragement as contrasting methods of verbal reinforcement. Subjects were 278 children from grades 4, 6, 8 and 10 at a university laboratory school attached to a large south-eastern university. A birth-order classification was assigned to each student on the basis of the number, ages and spacing of siblings in his or her family. Preference for reinforcement was assessed through the use of the Praise-Encouragement Preference Scale. The results revealed a significant difference between only and middle children with the former showing a stronger preference for praise and the latter demonstrating a stronger preference for encouragement. These results are discussed in terms of birth-order theory, and recommendations for further research are suggested.
