The term natural gas refers to hydrocarbon-rich gas; it is a gaseous fossil fuel that is found in oil fields, natural gas fields, and coal beds (Carroll, 2010; Speight, 2007). Natural gas is colorless, shapeless, and odorless. The combustion of natural gas that gives off a significant amount of energy (Lee et al., 2007) with negligible emissions of sulfur dioxide and lower emissions of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide compared to other fossil fuels (coal and crude oil). This fact makes natural gas an environmentally friendly, clean fuel when compared with other fossil fuels (Feng et al., 2007). The total worldwide proved reserves of natural gas were 186.9 trillion cubic meters (tcm) at the end of 2015 according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy (2016). Elsevier Inc.
