    Abstract
This work focuses on motivational factors and challenges of cooperative partnering between contractors in the construction industry. The purpose is to identify the main obstacles to forming such relationships and methods for facilitating these relationships. The research methodology is exploratory in nature, which uses a questionnaire to collect the needed data from construction industry professionals worldwide. The data, collected from 134 participants, were used in various statistical analyses including relative importance index (RII), exploratory factor analysis (EFA), linear regression analysis, and correlation and comparison of means analysis. The results emphasized that having better risk management and sharing designs and technical solutions are the main motivational factors affecting the partnering decision. It was also found that the most significant challenges are in sharing technical expertise with partners and management of partners' relations. The conclusion is that multiple measures should be established by public agencies and project owners to facilitate cooperation between general contractors that will bring benefits to both parties. A precise framework is proposed for future researchers to identify and clarify mutual goals, tactical objectives, procedures, and various aspects of partners' relations.
