Alternative AbstractGreat interest has been given in the productive behavior of employees because of its relation to the total productivity of the society. There is widespread contention that the productivity of the employees in the public sector is less than their counterpart in other sectors. This study tried to measure level of motivation toward work of employees in public sector and compared to employees in other sectors. Additional variables were measured to assess their effect on motivation namely sex, nature of the job, years of experience and job title. The instrument was administered to 2600 subjects in various sectors. The results showed that the level of motivation was moderate for the total sample. Meanwhile, the employees in private sector were the highest and the employees in the public sector were the lowest. Male employees proved to have higher level of motivation than females. The nature of the job, administrative vs. technical, had no effect on motivation. The study showed that motivation toward work increases as the job rank and years of experience increase.
