Al Janoub was the first new-build stadium designed for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM. This paper describes the journey of the engineering design of the 40,000 seat stadium, from the concept and detailed design development stages led by AECOM and Zaha Hadid Architects, through to the design and build contract on site. An architectural jewel located in Al Wakrah, just south of the city of Doha, the stadium was a world's first, using state of the art computational analysis and physical modelling to create a safe, cooled environment that satisfies FIFA's requirements for both player and spectator comfort in the extreme temperatures of the region. A sustainable post-tournament legacy was also a key factor of the design, allowing it to be reduced to a 20,000-capacity stadium for the local football club and community. The task of integrating the stadium's stringent performance requirements on this path-finder project, including extensive scientific research and development, was a challenge that was overcome through close collaboration between the Design Team and the Supreme Committee's (SC) subject matter experts. The project's success as a test-bed helped it to set the standard for other stadia as part of the overall FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM programme.

Inherently safer design tool (i-SDT): A property-based risk quantification metric for inherently safer design during the early stage of process synthesis
Eljack, Fadwa; Kazi, Monzure-Khoda; Kazantzi, Vasiliki ( Elsevier Ltd , 2019 , Article)In this work, an Inherently Safer Design Tool (i-SDT) is presented for early stage process synthesis to characterize and track the risk associated with different life-cycle phases of industrial processes. It also helps to ... -
Design and optimization of a luminescent Samarium complex of isoprenaline: A chemometric approach based on Factorial design and Box-Behnken response surface methodology
Sakr M.; Hanafi R.; Fouad M.; Al-Easa H.; El-Moghazy S. ( Elsevier B.V. , 2019 , Article)A chemometrically optimized procedure has been developed for the determination of isoprenaline (ISO) in the parent substance as well as in its respective pharmaceutical preparation. It is worth mentioning that although ... -
Ionic liquid design for enhanced carbon dioxide capture by computer-aided molecular design approach
Chong, F.K.; Foo, D.C.Y.; Eljack, F.T.; Atilhan, M.; Chemmangattuvalappil, N.G. ( Springer Verlag , 2015 , Article)Carbon capture and storage is an emerging technology to mitigate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industrial sources such as power plants. Post-combustion capture based on aqueous amine scrubbing is one of the most ...
