Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to determine the need of elementary school students for counselling services and to find out if there are any differences for these needs between boys and girls on the one hand, and between urban and rural students on the other, as perceived by their form masters.
The sample of the study consisted of 478 male and female form masters working in 27 elementary schools in Doha City and some Qatari villages. A special questionnaire was designed by the researcher for this purpose, It comprised 42 items representing the needs of elemetary school students in three different areas: academic, social and psychological. The reliability and the validity of the instrument has been verifed.
Suitable statistical techniques such as frequency percentages and Chi-square were used in the analyses of the data.
The research findings were as follows:
1. There is a great need for counselling services in all three areas, by all
students, regardless of sex and school location;
2. There were no significant differences between boys and girls in the kind of
counselling services that they need except in 7 out of 42 services measured
by the instrument of the study;
3. There were no significant differences between urban and rural students in the
kind of counselling services that they need, except, in 4 out of 42 services measured by the instrument of the study;
4. The need for academic counselling services for elementary school students
was ranked by the subjects as the most important, followed by the need for
social counselling services, and then the need for psychological counselling
services. |
