Title: Educational Characteristics of the Population of Saudi Arabia: A Study in Population Geography

Abstract: This study aims to understand the educational status of the population of Saudi Arabia in general, and present the spatial variation of illiteracy rates in particular. It aslo examines the age-sex differentials and attempts to explain the spatial variation in terms of demographic, social, and economic variables. The study shows a sharp decline in the overall illiteracy rates, from high levels (60%) to relatively reasonable levels (18%) in 1999. The illiteracy rates have also declined from 67% for Saudis and 53% for Non'Saudis in 1974 to 20% and about 13% in 1999 respectively. It is also found that there are clear patterns of spatial variations. That is to say, the illiteracy rates vary from one administrative area to the other, "with low levels being observed in Riyadh and the Eastern Province, while high levels are in the northern and southern parts of the country. Among several variables that are found to be strongly correlated with illiteracy rates, the urbanisation level in the adminstrative area is the sole variable that explains most of spatial variations in illiteracy. It is also found that despite the narrowing gap between males and females in terms of their educational attainment, the gap is apparently still too large! Fortunately though, it is noticed that illiteracy rates are very low among the young people, but tend to be very high among older people, and especially among females. This could mean, however, that illiteracy is expected to sharply decline in the near future, especially with the rising school enrolment rates for the both sexes.نظرأ لدور الغعليم الأساسي في تحسين وضع الإنسان ، ورفع مستوى معيشته ونوعية حياته ، ولما له من ارتباط وثيق بالمتغيرات السكانية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والصحية، هدنت هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على الخصائص التعليميه للسكان بشكل عام ، مع التركيز على إبراز مستولات الأمية وتباينها المكاني ، وتناوتها العمري والنوعي ، والكشف عن المتغيرات المرتبطة بها والمؤثرة فيها ، بشكل خاص . واعتمد ضقيق ذلك على العديد من مصادر البيانات ، ومن أبرزها : المسح الديموغرافي لعام 1419 د، بالإضافة إلى تعداد السكان في المملكة لعامي 4 39 (د، و 3 1 4 (د. رشاء عليه ، أظهرت الدراسة أن الأمية شهدت انخفاضاكبيرأ، من مستولات مرتنعة تصل إلى65% إلى مستويات معقولة مقارنة بالدول الأخرى، حيث أصبحت لا تتجارز نسبة الأمية 18 % في عام 419 (د. وانخفضت نسب الأمية بين السعوديين وغير السعوديين من 67% و 53% في عام 4 39 1 د إلى 0 2% و 3( % في عام 9 1 4 (د على التوالي . كما كشفت الدراسة عن وجود تباين كبير ني تلك الخصائص بين المناطق سواء ش نسب الأمية أو في نسب .
