Alternative Abstract | This study provides an analytical view on the paths of the Iranian position towards the Syrian revolution that has transformed into a crisis. These paths start with the beginning of the Syrian revolution and took shape according to the daily developments in the Syrian political scene as well as the developments in the Iranian regional and international political scene. The study reviews the rapid changes that affect important issues in which Iran is involved whether it has to do with the Iranian nuclear issue and the final agreement expected by the end of June 2015 as well as possible effects of Decisive Storm in Yemen on the Iranian position towards the Syrian revolution as well as the impact of the progress achieved by ISIS and whether it would benefit Iran or adds new challenges to the Iranian politics in the Arab political scene in general. It does not seem that Tehran is ready for fundamental change in how it deals with the volatile political situation in Syria. The options seem to be limited given the regional and international political changes especially the theory of "political vacuum" and after the ending of the phenomenon of moderate political Islam represented by the Muslim Brotherhood Movement which Tehran was investing in for more than a decade. It seems that the absence of players or disregarding them by handing things over to the United States is a phenomenon that seems to come to an end though seemingly temporarily. What happened in Yemen indicates this. It doesn’t seem that the military operation Decisive Storm is only a response to Iran's foreign policy toward Yemen; it rather seems to be as an option that could be generalized. Therefore a Decisive Storm in Syria by Turkish-Saudi cooperation was suggested. The relationship between Iran and Russia is almost one of the factors that cast shadows on Tehran positions particularly towards the Syrian issue. The extent and the confrontational policy that Russia would adopt in confronting Washington concerning the Syrian issue. |
