AbstractIn this issue of Current Reviews in Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology, a review by Mero Ríos et al. provides a comprehensive overview of the antioxidant properties of trimetazidine (TMZ) as well as its cardiovascular, antidiabetic, and renal effects [1]. It highlights the evolving understanding of the mechanisms of action of TMZ and, consequently, the prospective therapeutic applications beyond its traditional use as an antianginal agent. A multitude of preclinical data are discussed to demonstrate the diverse effects of TMZ on cellular metabolism and oxidative stress. The molecular pathways involved in the action of TMZ, particularly its involvement in regulating fatty acid oxidation and reactive oxygen species production, are also determined. This review offers valuable insights into the drug's potential applications in various pathological conditions.
