    Abstract
Significant academic and industrial research has been dedicated in the last few years to employing modified nanoclay as reinforcement for the polymeric matrix. The modification of nanoclays is crucial for the proper intercalation and dispersion into the polymeric matrix. Different methods have been experienced to modify the nanoclay, including chemical modification and long alkyl chains of ammonium or phosphate ions. Advanced synthesis methods have also been explored to incorporate nanoclays into polymer matrices. Polymeric nanocomposites have enhanced properties that make them highly promising for a wide range of industrial applications. such as aerospace, food packaging, biomedical, petroleum, and construction. This chapter's main aim is to briefly report the modification of nanoclays, the synthesis method to develop nanoclay-based polymeric nanocomposites, properties, characterization techniques, and applications in numerous industries. Finally, a further emphasis on the prospective future trends of the functionalized nanoclay-based polymeric nanocomposites is provided to explore this family of advanced materials.
