    Abstract
Written health information materials, including medicine information, are intended to increase the health literacy of patients so they may be better informed about their health. The written health and medicine information for patients is critical to support verbal information and to ensure the effective and safe use of medicines within any healthcare system. The aim of this chapter is to provide instruction on the planning, development, and evaluation of written health information for patients. The planning stage requires identifying the target audience and the main objective for the written health communication. The development stage focuses on the usage of various strategies such as plain language, active voice, and inclusivity to improve the content of the material that is delivered to patients through written material. The final stage of developing written health information expects that all written patient material undergoes an evaluation process using health literacy assessment instruments such as the Patient Education Material Assessment Tool, Clear Communication Index, and Suitability Assessment of Materials. Lastly, engagement of patient feedback is necessary to complete the evaluation process prior to final dissemination of the written material. The development of well-designed written health information will ensure that patients understand and take an active role in their health.
